 How to classify sensors according to the type of output signal?


Based on the type of output signal, sensors can be classified into the following categories:

1. Analog Signal Sensors:

This type of sensor outputs a continuously changing analog signal, such as voltage, current or resistance. Moreover, analog signal sensors are suitable for the need to accurately measure the continuous change of physical quantities, such as temperature, pressure, flow, etc. On the other side, the advantage of analog signal sensors is high accuracy, can continuously measure and record data, but the disadvantage is that it is susceptible to environmental noise and temperature and other factors, therefore the need for signal compensation and filtering.


2. Digital signal sensor:

This sensor output is a digital signal, such as binary code or ASCII characters. Thus, these sensors are commonly used in industrial automation control, instrumentation measurements and other fields, with high signal stability, strong anti-interference ability, high accuracy, and other advantages. Moreover, although the cost of digital signal sensors is higher, but the scope of application is wide.


3. Switching Signal Sensors:

This type of sensor outputs discrete switching state signals, such as normally closed, normally open, idle, etc. Switching signal sensors are usually used to detect the switching state of objects or environments, such as the control of switches, proximity switches and other fields. The advantage of the switching signal sensor is high reliability, but the disadvantage is limited control accuracy, thus, it cannot accurately measure the size of the physical quantity.


4. Pulse Signal Sensors:

This type of sensor outputs pulse signals, such as counters, rotary encoders, etc. Therefore, these sensors are widely used in the field of measuring physical quantities such as rotation, linear displacement, etc. They can convert physical quantities into digital quantities and have the advantages of high-speed response and high accuracy. Nonetheless, the disadvantages are that they are susceptible to contact limitations and the operating device is easily affected by the physical environment.
